Coincidental timing on a post on the Seitch Blog today about oil supply and demand that adds to my post from a couple days ago. In 2007, the US used 24.9 barrels per capita per year and China used 2.1.
Chinese oil consumption increased 5.5 percent in 2007 to 7.7 million barrels per day—accounting for half the growth in global demand for the year. China’s oil use has nearly doubled in the past...
Friend Lust
noraleah:
A close friend of Michelle Obama’s has said, “I’ve actually had girlfriends call me and go, ‘You’re so lucky. If I’d only met her 15 years ago, I bet we would be best friends.’”
From “The Other Obama” in The New Yorker.
Made me think about the people I lust after as friends. Definitely the Cusacks. Want to hang out with them. (I’d totally make out with John but I wouldn’t let it...

I’m writing a paper on this now. Feel free to share your insight via reblog/email.
My sense is mostly yes, it is sustainable, for the following reasons:
I believe in peak oil and that we are at or past the peak. i.e., we have no choice.
The 70s oil shocks were supply side (OPEC limited production and could and did easily increase production later), whereas the vast majority of the...

How To Make Good Tea →

Marco wrote this excellent post on how to make great coffee, so I thought I’d complement it with a post on how to make great tea. Here goes. Insert teabag. Insert hot water. Insert milk. Remove teabag. Stir. I hope this was useful.
I beg to differ on this. It makes the world of difference if you switch your “insert hot water” with your “insert milk.” Milk first, then hot...

The two best games of the tourney so far happened back to back on the same court in Tampa. Drake and Western Kentucky and then UConn and San Diego. Both favorites came back to push the games to overtime. Both underdogs hit winners to take the lead in the closing seconds of overtime. Incredible.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days

mattlehrer: I watched the 2007 Palme d’Or winner, 4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile, last night. That is an intense movie. I think that whatever your opinion on Roe v Wade, you will probably strengthen your opinion after watching this movie. So for the last two days that song has been stuck in my head except the singer has a lisp.
It’s time once again for the Sheriff of Good Times.
The Fed is in full on panic mode. It’s as if there is no bread and people are buying this market as if Bernanke is saying ‘here’s some icing to hold you over.’ There isn’t even cake. Can someone explain this to me?

Awkward Salesperson Award
I went to Paragon with my friend Kat yesterday to help her pick out a tent and sleeping bag (ok I wasn't much help) for her upcoming two week bike camping trip on the California coast with her brother and then for use in Panama where she's moving with the Peace Corps. She started explaining what kind of tent she wanted to the sales guy.
Sales guy: One person tent?
Kat: Two.
Sales guy: (Looks at her, looks at me) Hubba hubba.
Kat and I look at each other with the universal "did he just say that?" look. We found out about five minutes later that the Hubba Hubba is a two person tent.
