When It Comes to Television Content, Affiliate Fees Make the World Go ‘Round → abovethecrowd.com

By far the best article I read today. On how the past and present of the TV business effects digital distribution (including why Hulu is moving to a subscription model) and what to expect in the future.

“At this point, I think we’re in Wile E. Coyote mode. Nobody look down or all of Europe falls apart.” —Crazy Nut Job: 4/28/2010

Crazy Nut Job does such a great job summarizing the economic turmoil that I don’t feel like I need to read as many other sources as I used to (which is lucky because my focus has shifted). And he says he’s being lazy. If you want to keep up with the global economy, I think it’s a great way to do so.

“The boss drives people; the leader coaches them. The boss depends on authority; the leader on good will. The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm. The boss says ‘I’; the leader says ‘we.’ The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown. The boss says ‘go’; the leader says ‘let’s go!’” —H. Facebook is a Ponzi Scheme → blog.jperla.com

But, then, how is Facebook so profitable? Are they lying? No. They are growing. More and more people get on Facebook, and more and more businesses hear about how many people are on Facebook. It seems like a huge opportunity. So each business individually and in turn experiments with Facebook ads. They spend hundreds or thousands or more on Facebook ads. At the end of the first run, they see bad ROIs. They tweak the ads and spend more money and try again. Nothing. So they stop, understanding that Facebook ads are worthless. Everyone I’ve talked to who has actually bought Facebook ads knows this. But, not everyone has bought Facebook ads yet.

This is interesting and well thought out except no one gets the benefits of the new dollars/suckers but Facebook.

“The result is that lots of geeks are considering leaving Facebook, and perhaps even more interestingly, veritable droves of Google software engineers are among them. This includes Matt Cutts, head of the webspam team at Google (see below) who has not technically left, but has deactivated his Facebook account.” —Privacy issues? Greece, Dred Scott, and the American Civil War → blogs.telegraph.co.uk

Of course, this complaint threatens to unleash havoc in all kinds of ways. “This may cause a great crisis in Europe but we already have a crisis,” said Dr Karl Albrecht Schachtschneider, law professor at Nuremberg University and author of the complaint, when we chatted yesterday.

He will ask for an injunction to freeze all aid for Greece while the case is pending, which may take weeks or months.

How will the Court rule? The breach of the no bail-out clause of Article 125 of the Treaties is so clear that it will be very hard to finesse. “It is a question of law – the duty of the court to defend the German constitution. They have no choice other than reaching a lawful decision,” he said.

“There are two types of startup ideas: those that grow organically out of your own life, and those that you decide, from afar, are going to be necessary to some class of users other than you. Apple was the first type. Apple happened because Steve Wozniak wanted a computer. Unlike most people who wanted computers, he could design one, so he did. And since lots of other people wanted the same thing, Apple was able to sell enough of them to get the company rolling. They still rely on this principle today, incidentally. The iPhone is the phone Steve Jobs wants” —Paul Graham - Organic Startup Ideas (via bijan)
