Along with a bunch of friends, I had the pleasure of joining Pepper and his extended family at his uncle’s farm in Berryville, Virginia, this past weekend. I believe it was the 31st time they’ve held the event, which they call simply ‘The Hogroast,’ and it was my third year in a row. It’s a weekend of great people, great music and great food. The past three years, around eighty to a hundred people have attended. Always one of the highlights of the weekend is an event called the Rebel Yell. Competitors line up to take a swig of whiskey and do their best to imitate Confederate soldiers. Past winners are the judges and they qualitatively reward volume, stamina and style. We were lucky enough to see and hear Pepper win for the first time this year. He said he took frequent opportunities to practice over the past year at concerts and generally anytime that yelling and whooping to show appreciation is socially acceptable. I’ll have to practice often for next year.
