High Fructose Corn Syrup

emilyposts:

Can someone please explain to me, in easy to understand terms, what high fructose corn syrup is and why I should avoid it?

I heard someone mention recently that this is something terrible to put into your body, but I consume it every day in yogurt and Diet Coke, so I’d like to know exactly what harm I’m doing to my body. I’m probably really late to the game if I’m just discovering this is bad for me - have I already done irreparable harm?

I did a quick Google search, but I didn’t really understand what I was reading.

It’s a cheaper, sweeter alternative to sugar that started to enter mass production around 1970. The body has evolved to shut off your appetite when eating sugar, but with high fructose corn syrup there’s no off switch. The off switch is the production of insulin and leptin which aren’t triggered by corn syrup.

There’s none in Diet Coke, by the way.
