WORD is my new favorite neighborhood bookstore. It is dreamy— there are readings, scrabble nights, the heralded “staff picks” (the sole reason I hope to one day work at a bookstore), and even a dang book club. They are reading The Remainder right now. I think it’s time to make some new nerdfriends. Also, Rick Moody and everyone’s favorite (heh) Tao Lin are both reading in Sept. Hello bookstore of my dreams, I’ve been waiting for you all my life.

Where is this? My favorite bookstores are St. Marks Bookshop and McNally-Jackson.

I was killing time in Soho earlier this year and wandered into McNally-Jackson. I looked around for a while, listened to part of the book reading that was going on, and then tried to find a book that had just been recommended to me. I asked someone if they had it, and he looked it up in the computer. He said they didn’t and “is it wonderful?” I thought this was a strange question to ask because I think most people looking to buy a book haven’t read it yet but I said that it had just been recommended by someone whose last recommendation I loved. He offered to order one for me (has anyone done this since the web was invented?) and then said that he’d order one for the store. Instant favorite bookstore in NYC, replacing Coliseum Books. I miss that place. Glad to see another place that should have a similar vibe.
