I don’t think that’s it. Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Kermit and Oscar the Grouch are all original characters from 1969. The Count (1972) and Grover (1972) were introduced shortly after. Elmo didn’t become Elmo until 1985. That (plus the fact that Oscar is a grouch) pretty much exactly explains the survey results (below). [Yes, this is Sesame Street day.]
